MARKEL ELECTRIC PRODUCTS
Markel Electric Products (MEP) was founded by Joseph Markel (1888-1966) in 1920. Markel was born in Lithuania and came to the United States in 1891. The company was located at 145 Seneca Street in Buffalo, New York. A century ago, this was a bustling industrial area. Down the street was the thriving Larkin Company, and their globally famous Administration Building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Today, the area is but a shadow of its former thriving self, and block after block is vacant. The Larkin Administration Building itslef was demolished in the 1950s – a stunning act of cultural vandalism.
All large American cities once had busy industrial areas employing millions of workers, most of whom lived just blocks from the factories and walked (or took a streetcar) to work. All this seems like an ancient time, a lost age far, far away when America actually made stuff. Quality stuff, too.
This listing is for:
Sets like this were once common. The chandelier was intended to hang low-ish over a dining table, and the pendant in the living room.
The shades are really gorgeous. They are a pale beige, and have a textured surface. The upper edge is like large diamonds. On the bottom are striking starburst-like spears and concentric rings. Wow.
The finials are also great. They consist of a brass piece, an intricate glass dome, and a coppery disk. Very cool.
The stems are intricate glass vases.
Most of the metal components have a coppery toned finish – an original effect.
The set is not actually restored yet. This will take a week after payment is received. All the wiring will be new, and the vertical wire on the chandelier will be cloth-covered like the original. The coppery finish on the pendant is how both fixtures will look after restoration.
This set will be shipped wholly restored, ready to hang, and with all the mounting hardware needed!
