ABOUT THE 1940s
Just after WW II, and before, say, the mid-1950s, there’s a particular era of design that I have a great fondness for. This era, as yet, has no name. People just tend to lump it into the Mid-Century Modern category. However, a study of lights of this era reveals a very particular aesthetic.
I can only assume that the men and women who created magnificent pre-war lighting fixtures were still around after the war. Embedded within their experience was an artistic ability and color sense that was soon to vanish. What I find so attractive about this Era-That-Has-No-Name is the fascinating combination of the past and future. The future is represented by the basic design of 1940s fixtures; they don’t really look like pre-war fixtures. The past is rich colors and lush details. By the latter 1950s the past was extinct as the Atomic Age ushered in a mania for The New and simplicity reined.
Houses from the 1940s are also very different than those from the 1950s. They may also at a glance look the same but there are many people, like me, who delight in the differences.
The fixtures feature slumped glass shades with wonderful stylized leaves in green and pink!
Surrounding the shades are lovely bands of pierced brass. These really come alive when the fixtures are lighted.
Under the shades are the original finial disks, and the original finials. And the finials are fabulous! They are hand-blown glass with a swirl design. Like miniature tornadoes!
This set is ready to hang, and comes with all the mounting hardware needed!
- Each fixture accepts four standard base 60W bulbs (not included). I suggest appliance-size bulbs.
- There are subtle differences between the two fixtures. The only visible difference is that one fixture has a very thin lip at the very top of the brass ring where it touches the ceiling. The other difference is that the sockets are different in each fixture (one has porcelain sockets, the other has Bakelite).
COLOR: The shades are white with pale green and pink designs. Brass.
SIZE: The fixtures hang down 5-1/2-inches and are 14-1/2-inches wide.
- The only issue is some chips to the shades at their center mounting holes. However, the chips are covered by the finial disks.
- The porcelain sockets on one fixture are original with new wiring. The Bakelite sockets on the other fixture are new, with new wiring.
