Description

I’m very pleased to offer this incredible Art Deco pendant from the famous Higbee’s department store in downtown Cleveland!

From Wikipedia:
Higbee’s Public Square flagship store was known for its tenth-floor Silver Grille restaurant and was prominently featured in the 1983 movie A Christmas Story. It closed in January 2002. The Main Floor, second, and third floors were restored in 2007 to house the new offices of the Convention & Visitors Bureau of Greater Cleveland and the Greater Cleveland Partnership, while the Silver Grille was restored for special events. The building was again completely remodeled in 2011 and opened on May 14, 2012 as the Horseshoe Casino Cleveland.

In 1965, the store was redone by well-known designer Raymond Loewy, and a lot of the original lighting was removed. The fixture listed here was given to an employee when the store closed; I purchased the fixture from his son.

The fixture is extraordinary. The main shade is very large (21-inches wide). This hangs from three chains. I love it! There is a smaller shade under the main shade, and these are separated a bit, allowing light to peek out. The finial is also quite dramatic.

The color seems to change, depending on the light. Sometimes the fixture looks like bronze. Sometimes it is a grayish color. The lower disk looks silvery. The fixture looks more silvery in the images than it does in person.

I am baffled as to what the metal is. A magnet does not stick so it is not steel. Nor does it seem to be brass. I am also baffled as to the finish. No polish I used seemed to make any difference. The large shade has scuffing overall (see image), and this would not polish out (I do not mind the scuffing, visually; the fixture simply looks vintage).

There is a wonderful socket cluster, accepting four 100W bulbs. This 400W is redirected to the ceiling, offering a diffused, flattering quality of light.

The whole has been fully rewired. The center wire was originally thick and black. After an arduous search, I was able to replace this with the exact wire.

This is one of the most striking fixtures I have ever offered. It would make a dramatic statement in any home.

Wholly restored and with new wiring, this fixture is ready to hang, and comes with all the mounting hardware needed!

DETAILS: The fixture accepts four standard base 100W bulbs.

COLOR: See above.

SIZE: See above. As well, the fixture is 38-inches long. I can remove chain links to reduce the length. If you need the fixture longer please contact me. The ceiling canopy is a hair under 4-1/2-inches wide.

CONDITION:

  • I love writing this: there’s no damage.
  • The porcelain sockets are original with new wiring. The exposed vertical wire is also new.
  • As noted above, the main shade has overall scuffing (see image). This would not polish out. I do not find the scuffing unattractive.
  • There are small, subtle dings.
