1940s floral set by Globe. ONE ceiling fixture. THREE sconces
1 in stock
I’m very pleased to offer this lovely 1940s set of fixtures by Globe!
Globe Lighting Fixture Manufacturing Company had their main office and factory at 7th Avenue and 12th Street in Brooklyn, New York. They also had a showroom at 16 East 40th Street in Manhattan.
Every operation in the design and production of Globe fixtures occurs under one roof – from a 1941 catalog
Remember that far, far away time when America actually made stuff? Sigh.
ABOUT THE 1940s
Just after WW II, and before, say, the mid-1950s, there’s a particular era of design that I have a great fondness for. This era, as yet, has no name. People just tend to lump it into the Mid-Century Modern category. However, a study of lights of this era reveals a very particular aesthetic.
I can only assume that the men and women who created magnificent pre-war lighting fixtures were still around after the war. Embedded within their experience was an artistic ability and color sense that was soon to vanish. What I find so attractive about this Era-That-Has-No-Name is the fascinating combination of the past and future. The future is represented by the basic design of 1940s fixtures; they don’t really look like pre-war fixtures. The past is rich colors and lush details. By the latter 1950s the past was extinct as the Atomic Age ushered in a mania for The New and simplicity reined.
Houses from the 1940s are also very different than those from the 1950s. They may also at a glance look the same but there are many people, like me, who delight in the differences.
This listing includes:
- ONE surface-mounted ceiling fixture!
- THREE matching wall sconces!
The ceiling fixture is 14-inches wide. It could be used in a medium- to small-sized living room, an average-sized bedroom, or a foyer. The fixture is but 4-inches high, too, so is ideal for a room with a low ceiling.
The set features striking and luscious floral bouquets. So pretty.
The sconces have a wonderful Regency-styled flourish on top. I love these kinds of details.
Wholly restored and with new wiring, this set is ready to hang, and comes with all the mounting hardware needed!
DETAILS: The fixtures accept standard base 60W bulbs. Four for the ceiling fixture; one each for the sconces.
COLOR: Brass with patina. Colorful flowers. Frosted white.
SIZE: See above. As well, the sconces are 10-inches high, 5-wide, and they project 3-1/2-inches.
- The metal components are undamaged.
- The shade on the ceiling fixture is undamaged.
- The sconce shades have small chips to their fitting ends; these cannot be seen of course. One shade has a small chip to its upper edge, over to the left side.
- The sockets and wiring on the ceiling fixture are new.
- On the sconces, the sockets are original (and in fine shape) with new wiring.
- The brass has a slightly mottled patina. I do not find this unattractive so did not polish the brass bright.
