Description

I’m very pleased to offer a matching pair of extraordinary 2-bulb ceiling fixtures by Markel!

Markel Electric Products (MEP) was founded by Joseph Markel (1888-1966) in 1920. Markel was born in Lithuania and came to the United States in 1891. The company was located at 145 Seneca Street in Buffalo, New York. A century ago, this was a bustling industrial area. Down the street was the thriving Larkin Company, and their globally famous Administration Building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Today, the area is but a shadow of its former thriving self, and block after block is vacant. The Larkin Administration Building was demolished in the 1950s — a stunning act of cultural vandalism.
All large American cities once had busy industrial areas employing millions of workers, most of whom lived just blocks from the factories and walked (or took a streetcar) to work. All this seems like an ancient time, a lost age far, far away when America actually made stuff. Quality stuff, too.

This listing is for two matching 2-bulb fixtures.

The fixtures are one of the most remarkable designs created during an age of remarkable fixtures:

  • Each fixture has two mirror-like panels behind highly stylized birds. Wow.
  • The finials are incredible. These are almost always lost over time; it is impressive that these two remain.

The polychrome finish is an antiqued gold with jade accents.

Scale-wise, the fixtures are ideal for a small bedroom, hall, foyer, or bath. The fixtures are 13×7-inches wide, and 7-inches high.

With new wiring, this pair is ready to hang, and comes with all the mounting hardware needed!

DETAILS: The fixtures accept standard base 60W bulbs (not included).
COLOR: See above.
SIZE: See above.
CONDITION:

  • The mirror-like panels have varying degrees of age-related issues. These issues are not readily obvious with the fixtures mounted eight or more feet up in the air.
  • The sockets are original (and in fine shape) with new wiring and paper insulators.

SHIPPING: Insured shipping in the Continental US will be…FREE!
