1930s Gill chandelier

I’m very pleased to offer this late 1930s chandelier by Gill Glass!

Gill Glass & Fixture Company was located on Amber Street in Philadelphia, and occupied most of the block between East Tioga and East Venango Streets. The factory backed up against rail lines, as was common, and there would have almost certainly been a rail spur leading directly to Gill loading docks. The Gill buildings are extant, although they look a lot less attractive than they did as pictured, proudly, in Gill catalogs. The immediate area around the factory was all housing (and still is), and it can be assumed that many of these homeowners worked for Gill – an easy commute. All this seems like an ancient time, a lost age far, far away when America actually made stuff. Quality stuff, too. And when people didn’t have long commutes to work, and when railroads were powerful and important. Sigh.

The fixture is from Gill’s RITTENHOUSE line and features “Nugold” glass shades and a “Copper Bronze” and chrome finish. The fixture was sold by Gill beginning in the late 19230s, all through the 1940s, and into the early 1950s. In 1949, it was priced at $45!

The shades are incredible. They feature exquisite floral designs in relief and, when lighted, offer a subtle iridescent glow. Gorgeous!

The “Copper Bronze” finish (more like a coppery gold) shows its age. There is subtle spotting overall and subtle tonal irregularities. None of this is readily obvious with the fixture eight or feet in the air, and particularly so when all attention is drawn towards the fabulous shades.

The chrome on the long finial and outer Saturn ring looks excellent. The chrome on the dome just below the vase stem, and the chrome on the chain, is worn and missing in some small areas. Again, this is not readily obvious.

All the wiring is new, and the vertical wire is cloth-covered like the original. Nice.

This fixture is ready to hang, and comes with all the mounting hardware needed!

DETAILS: The fixture accepts standard base 60W bulbs (not included).
COLOR: See above. As well, the shades are a pale beige.
SIZE: The fixture hangs down about 29-inches and is 21-inches wide. I can remove up to 12-inches of chain; I can add chain.

  • The shades are undamaged. Wow.
  • The condition of the “Copper Bronze” finish, and Chrome, is described above.
  • The sockets are original with new wiring.

SHIPPING: Insured shipping in the Continental US will be…FREE!
