MARKEL ELECTRIC PRODUCTS
Markel Electric Products (MEP) was founded by Joseph Markel (1888-1966) in 1920. Markel was born in Lithuania and came to the United States in 1891. The company was located at 145 Seneca Street in Buffalo, New York. A century ago, this was a bustling industrial area. Down the street was the thriving Larkin Company, and their globally famous Administration Building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Today, the area is but a shadow of its former thriving self, and block after block is vacant. The Larkin Administration Building itslef was demolished in the 1950s – a stunning act of cultural vandalism.
All large American cities once had busy industrial areas employing millions of workers, most of whom lived just blocks from the factories and walked (or took a streetcar) to work. All this seems like an ancient time, a lost age far, far away when America actually made stuff. Quality stuff, too.
The fixture is breathtaking. The 16-inch shade is thick glass – a delicious kind of apricot color. Gorgeous. The whole surface is rich with arabesque-like designs in relief.
Incredibly, the stem is also glass and features the same designs in relief. Wow.
As the catalog image confirms, the fixture retains its original finial and ceiling canopy.
There is an amazing six sockets and each accepts a 60W bulb, or 360W total. So, the fixture is beautiful and brilliant. (I have not actually rewired the fixture yet; it will be shipped fully rewired and the vertical wire will be cloth-covered like the original.)
This is one of the most stunning chandeliers from a golden age of lighting.
This chandelier will be shipped wholly restored and with new wiring, ready to hang, and with all the mounting hardware needed!
DETAILS: The fixture accepts six standard base 60W bulbs.
COLOR: See above. Brass.
SIZE: The fixture hangs down about 31-inches and is 16-inches wide. I can remove up to 9-inches of chain; I can add chain.
- There is a chip to the inside edge of the shade.
- The Bakelite sockets are original (and in fine shape) with new wiring.
- The original chain was corroded (this is common). The new chain is period correct.
SHIPPING: Insured shipping in the Continental US will be…FREE!
