MARKEL ELECTRIC PRODUCTS
Markel Electric Products (MEP) was founded by Joseph Markel (1888-1966) in 1920. Markel was born in Lithuania and came to the United States in 1891. The company was located at 145 Seneca Street in Buffalo, New York. A century ago, this was a bustling industrial area. Down the street was the thriving Larkin Company, and their globally famous Administration Building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Today, the area is but a shadow of its former thriving self, and block after block is vacant. The Larkin Administration Building itslef was demolished in the 1950s – a stunning act of cultural vandalism.
All large American cities once had busy industrial areas employing millions of workers, most of whom lived just blocks from the factories and walked (or took a streetcar) to work. All this seems like an ancient time, a lost age far, far away when America actually made stuff. Quality stuff, too.
Both fixtures have a DAZZLING polychrome finish. STUNNING! The fixtures are aluminum, and much of this is exposed (the aluminum has aged to a gray-ish tone). The aluminum is complemented by gorgeous polychrome in green, red, and yellow. Wow. Wow!
This candle version is quite rare.

Wholly restored and with new wiring, this set is ready to hang, and comes with all the mounting hardware needed!
DETAILS: The fixtures accept standard base 60W bulbs (not included).

SIZE: The chandlers are 16-inches wide and hang down about 23-inches. I can remove up to 4-inches of chain; I can add chain.
CONDITION:
- I love writing this: there’s no damage.
- The sockets are new as is all the wiring. The vertical wires are cloth-covered like the original. Nice.
- The polychrome is largely original and only required minor touching-up.
